The Institute
of Literature |
The Institute of Literature consists of the Chinese
Literature Department, News Broadcasting Department,
Elementary Education Department, Chinese Language
Department, Editing and Publishing Department and
three major undergraduate departments in the field
of Elementary Education. The institute has three
research departments—Yellow River Folk Customs
Research Department, Applied Linguistics Research
Department, and Editing and Publishing Studies
Research Department. There are six areas of study
offered to Master degree students: Literature and
Art; Ancient Chinese Literature; Language and
Applied Linguistics; Folklore; and Chinese Language
and Education. At present there are forty-seven
full-time teaching staff, including twelve
professors and seventeen associate professors. Nine
of the teaching staff have Doctorate degrees, and
the rest of the staff have Master degrees.
In recent years, the institute has undertaken
research at the national and provincial level. In
the following key academic periodicals – “Literature
and Art Research”, “Legacy of Literature”, “Theory
and Analysis of Art and Literature”, “Language of
China”, “Dialects”, “Chinese Language Research”,
“Folk Customs Research”, “Chinese Opera” –
approximately 500 research articles have been
published.

The main purpose of training: |
To provide basic training in theory, knowledge and

Politics and
Law Institute
|
One of the main institutes in the area of liberal
arts at our university, the Politics and Law
Institute trains teachers of Political Thought and
Theory, cadres that will work in the government
system, and legal experts. The institute has two
departments—the Department of Political Thought
Education and the Law Department; and three research
institutes—the Research Institute of Marxist Theory
and Political Thought, the Sociology Research
Institute and the Research Institute of Comparative
Law.
The Politics
and Law Institute has a highly qualified teaching
staff. Of the forty-five staff, there are five
professors, fifteen associate professors, five
teaching staff with Doctorate degrees and nineteen
staff with Master degrees. In recent years, while
maintaining many teaching hours, teachers of this
institute have also engaged in significant
scientific research. The institute covers four of
the national level scientific research subjects and
eight of the provincial ones, publishing as many as
three hundred articles in national key periodicals.
It has also won many provincial awards in science
teaching. At present, there are twenty-three taught
classes in this institute and the number of the
students totals more than one thousand two hundred.
The institute has paid much attention to developing
appropriate teaching methods for the different
levels of study offered—for example, postgraduate,
undergraduate, correspondence and independent study.
The number of postgraduate students choosing to
study in this institute is increasing year by year.
In the provincial civil servant exams and female
cadre exams, over successive years students of this
university have received top marks, and subsequently
found good jobs in their field. Ninety five percent
of all students in this institute have found work on
graduation.

Law (non-teaching)
|
Main purpose of training:
|
Students in this department are trained to master
the knowledge of the basic theory of law and to
become very familiar with the working of the legal
system in China—in particular the policies of the
Chinese Communist Party. In this way, they will be
qualified to work in senior positions in the legal
system at the national and provincial government
level, or engage in legal work in enterprises or
social organizations.

The Institute of History and Tourist Culture
|
The institute mainly trains people who will teach in
middle schools, work as civil servants, or engage in
research or work in the field of tourism and
management. The institute consists of two
undergraduate departments—History and Tourist
Management. History was one of the earliest majors
offered at Shanxi Normal University. The History
Department offers two areas of study to Master
degree students, Specialized History and Education.
There are three key subjects: History of Ancient
China, Modern History of China and the History of
the World. The use of teaching aids, such as the
multi-media classroom, computer laboratories, the
Cultural Relic Exhibition Room and the modern
library, create a collaborative and dynamic
department combining the best of modern facilities.
In recent years, the institute has established a
cooperative relationship with some key schools and
historical sites in Shanxi Province, where teaching
and research is undertaken.

Foreign Languages
|
|
At present, there are ninety-five full-time teaching
staff in the Foreign Language Department, including,
three professors and twenty-three associate
professors. At least half of the teaching staff have
Doctorate degrees, Master degrees or have studied
abroad. Each year the department employs five or six
foreign teachers. There are three areas of study
offered to Master degree students – Linguistics and
Applied Linguistics, Curriculum and Teaching Theory,
and Education. The institute now consists of an
English Department, a Japanese Department and a
department that specializes in teaching English to
non-English majors. There are eleven phonetics
rooms, seven multimedia labs, one computer room and
one audio-visual room, and three broadcasting
studios. In the last five years, teachers in the
Foreign Language School have undertaken twenty
national and provincial projects and have published
fifteen works as well as 300 articles about foreign
language teaching and research.
A teacher from this school won first place in the
provincial basic skills competition for young
teachers. Also, every year the percentage of
students that pass the Band Four and Band Eight
English Proficiency Tests is increasing. Students
from this school have also won prizes in speech
contests, such as the CCTV Cup.

The Main purpose of training:

To provide basic training in English Language
knowledge and skills to students who will go on to
teach English language, or research in English
Language teaching and education. Other students will
work in broadcasting stations as radio announcers,
write scripts for television or engage in
translation work for enterprises that have overseas
connections.

also to comprehensively train students who will be
capable of working in foreign affair enterprises,
tourist agencies and in the field of foreign
economics and trade.

The Institute of Economic Management
|
|
The Institute of Economic Management consists of two
departments—the Economics Department and the Money
Management Department; and two research
departments—Economic Research Department and Shanxi
Sustainable Development Research Department. There
are thirty-one full-time teaching staff, including
six professors and fourteen associate professors.
Five of the teaching staff have Doctorate degrees
and six of them have Master degrees. The institute
offers two areas of study to Master degree
students—Political Economics and Regional Economics;
and two undergraduate departments—Economics and
Financial Affairs Management.
The institute possesses a variety of equipment. At
present, there is an ERP lab, a computer room and a
reference library containing over 20,000 books and
more than forty journals. The institute has a web
based and CD database of economic management, which
can meet the needs of the teachers and students for
teaching and research. The institute pays much
attention to the training of students’ practical
ability and has set up more than ten internships
with different companies in Shanxi.
|
The institute also attaches much importance to
scientific research. In recent years, it has offered
over twenty research subjects and has published more
than thirty articles in the key academic journal,
Journal of Economic Management. Also, fifteen works
have been published in the national press and six
awards have been given by the provincial government.
Some of the results of the research has been
effectively adopted by some government bodies and
enterprises. The institute has also established
cooperative relationships, to promote academic
exchange with many universities, including Japan’s
____________ University, Xian Transport University,
Fudan University and the Northwest University of
Economics.

Economic Studies
|
The main purpose of training:

To provide basic training in the theory of Marxist
Economics and Modern Western Economics Theory. To
assist the students in mastering modern economic
analysis methods and in gaining a wide range of
knowledge and ability in fields related to
economics. Students will go on to work in such
government departments as the Comprehensive Economic
Management Department and the Policy Research
Government Departments, financial organizations and
enterprises, engaging in economic analysis and
planning and economic management.

teaching staff have been given the provincial prize
for excellence in teaching. In the last five years,
the institute has undertaken two of the nationally
funded social and science programs and five of the
provincially funded programs. Two of these programs
have won the provincial excellence achievement
prize. The Institute has published eight academic
works in national periodicals and published over two
hundred articles in national and international
academic journals. The institute provides a high
standard of instruction and research, with a
reference library with over 300,000 yuan worth of
books, including ten kinds of journals.

The Institute of Education and Psychology
|
The Institute of Education and Psychology consists
of three departments—Educational Management
Department, Psychology Department and Pre-school
Education Department; three research
departments—Educational Science Research Department,
Curriculum and Teaching Research Department and
Comparative Education Research Department. There are
forty-three full-time teaching staff in this
Institute, including seven professors, thirteen
associate professors and ten lecturers. Five staff
have obtained a Doctorate degrees or will soon
receive one, and twelve staff have received or are
in the process of receiving Master degrees. Two
teachers have received prizes in the Provincial
Teaching Competition.
The institute has many different projects it has
undertaken recently, including national and
provincial projects—for example, two National
Educational Science Planning projects; one key
project from the Education Department on curriculum
reform in basic education; as well as over twenty
provincial education projects, including three
projects for students who have returned from
overseas study. At present, the Institute has
undertaken eleven provincial scientific research
projects and has won a number of prizes in the area
of social science, also at the provincial level. In
the last five years, the institute has published 200
academic articles, forty of them published in top
academic journals.
The institute offers five areas of study to Master
degree students—Principles of Education, Educational
Economics and Management, the History of Education,
the Theory of Curriculum and Teaching and an
Education Masters (management-oriented). The
institute has four undergraduate
departments—Pre-school Education, Management of
Public Business, Education and Psychology. At
present, the institute has established a wide range
of cooperative relationships with the external
world, including seven practice bases in middle
schools, primary schools and kindergartens. It is
also cooperating with experimental kindergartens
opened in Guangdong and Shenzhen. Apart from this,
the institute has established a relationship of
academic exchange and cooperation with the
Psychology Department of Brigham Young University,
the Education Institutes of Columbia University in
America, Munich University in Germany and the
Chinese University in Hong Kong, as well as the
Education Department of King’s College of London
University in the United Kingdom.

The Research Institute of Traditional Opera and
Historical Relics
|
The institute was founded in 1984. In 1990, it was
given the right to confer Master degrees and it
became a key provincial program in 1996. In 1998 it
was designated as a “Model Collective” by the Shanxi
Provincial Government. Among the full-time staff,
there are two teachers who have Doctorate degrees
and five teachers who have Master degrees. At
present, there are five professors, all of whom are
teachers of postgraduate students and eighty percent
of the teaching staff have the status of associate
professor or above. The main characteristic of the
institute: excellence in field studies and combined
research of folk and documentary materials. The
institute focuses on four areas—scientific research,
teaching, historical relic exhibitions and
publishing academic journals in this field, and has
received obvious achievements. Now, the institute
has become an important base of overseas opera
research. It is one of the strongest subjects of
Shanxi Normal University and has created a
platform for international exchange specializing in
opera relics and folk opera.

Public Business Management (Culture-Business
Management Oriented) (non-teaching)

Main purpose of training:
|
To train students who are well versed in culture and
art but are also skilled in economic management, who
will go on to work in the culture industry. They
will educate people on the present situation of the
culture industry and undertake research in the
development of the culture industry. They will also
work in the field of cultural relics and
international exchange (of cultural relics).

The Institute of
Music
|
At present, there are 45 full-time teaching staff in
the Institute of Music, including one professor,
five associate professors and eleven lecturers. Mr.
Wu Tianqiu of the English Department of the Central
Music College, Professor Huang Meiying of the
Capital Teachers University, Mr. Nie Zhongming, a
famous conductor from the Central Broadcasting
Symphony Group and Mr. Niu Baoling from the Shanxi
Song and Dance Theatre—are all guest professors at
the university.
|
The institute has achieved much success with its
breakthroughs in using the theoretical skill of
composing and its original renditions of traditional
Shanxi Folk Songs. The Candela Chorus of Shanxi Normal University, whose members are mainly
students from this department, has won first prize
in the International Chorus Festival and National
Students Theatrical Festival and the Shanxi College
Theatrical Festival many times. The Candela Chorus
has produced a CD with the People’s Music Publishing
Press. In recent years, this institute has published
twenty-eight national level theses, five books and
60 provincial theses, and has received over ten
awards. The institute is currently applying for the
right to confer Master degrees for the following
subjects: Ethnic Vocal Music, Music Education and
Ethnic Music.

Chinese Painting, and Design. Each of these majors
has its own teaching and research section. In 2003,
another field of study was added for Master degree
students.

The Institute of Math and Computer Science
|
The Institute of Math and Computer Science consists
of three departments, the Math Department, the
Computer Science and Technology Department and
Information and Calculating Science Department. It
also has two research departments—Math and Applied
Math Research Department and the Computer Software
Exploiting Research Department. Applied Math is a
key provincial subject. There are three areas of
study offered to master degree students—Applied
Math, Basic Math and Calculus, and two majors—Math
Curriculum and Teaching and Computing Curriculum and
Teaching. The institute has nearly one thousand five
hundred students, approximately one hundred and ten
postgraduate students, 1120 undergraduates and 320
junior college students as well as over one thousand
adult students. The institute has 88 staff,
including 78 professional teachers, 3 tutors, 12
professors and 20 associate professors. One staff
has a doctorate degree, eight will soon receive
doctorate degrees, and twenty staff have Master
degrees. It is a young staff, with ninety percent of
them under the age of forty. Since 2000 the
institute has begun to enroll postgraduate students
and has established eleven majors for them.
In recent years, scholars like Professor Huo
Jinchuan, Zhang Qinhai and Gao Mingchu have gained
renown in Quantitative Mathematics and and
Application in Bead and ????. The institute has
undertaken over ten national research programs
concurrently, over thirty provincial research
programs and ten development programs. According to
incomplete statistics, teachers in this institute
have published over four hundred articles in
journals both at home and abroad; this includes
seventy published in famous international journals
and two hundred published in national journals. They
have also published fifteen papers from
international conferences and over forty books and
translations of different works. The programs they
have undertaken have won many prizes—for example,
the Science and Technology Progressive Prize
presented by the National Education Committee, the
National Excellence in Teaching Prize, the
Excellence Award for scholars returned from study
abroad, the National Youth Science and Technology
Prize, and the Provincial Science and Technology
Progressive Prize. About forty dissertations have
been accepted by the world renowned Science and
Technology Essay Searching System.
In October 2001, the institute held an international
academic meeting on Bead Theory and Bead Algebra. In
August 2003, the National Math Mass Conference was
successfully hosted by the institute.
In the National University Students’ ??? Math
Competitions, held from 1999 to 2003, three teams
from this institute won national second, four
provincial first prizes, and three teams won
provincial second prize and four teams won
provincial third prize. One hundred percent of
students found employment after graduation.
The long-term plan of the institute is to develop
more rapidly and improve the training in order that
the Math and Computer Science Department of Shanxi Normal University will be a base for training
qualified personnel in math, computing and
information technology.
