Physical Education
Institute
|
The
Physical Education Institute of Shanxi Normal University
was developed on the basis of the Physical Education
Institute of the Normal Junior College in Southern Shanxi,
which was built in 1958. In 1964, it was called the Physical
Education Department of Shanxi Normal College. In 1984, it
was given the name of Physical Education Department of
Shanxi Normal University, which merged with Linfen
Teachers Junior College in 1989. After that, the Physical
Education Institute of Shanxi Normal University came into
being. It was merged into Shanxi Normal University by the
Shanxi People’s Government in 1999. It is now the largest
and the only Physical Education Institute in Shanxi Province
with its own school area. The institute consists of the
Physical Education Pedagogy Department, Traditional Ethnic
Physical Education Department and the Social Physical
Education Department, the Public Physical Culture Education
and Research Department, and the People’s Exercise Research
Department. There are six rooms for doing subject teaching
and research. There are three areas of study offered to
Master degree students: Physical Education Humanistic
Sociology, Physical Education and Pedagogy of Physical
Education.
There are 135 full-time teaching and working staff in this
institute, including 100 professional teachers. Among them,
there are eight professors, thirty-three associate
professors and forty-five lecturers; and also eight national
referees and forty-two national first-level referees. The
institute offers both postgraduate and undergraduate
courses, and currently has 1800 graduate students and 1400
correspondence students. Since the institute was established
it has trained 4376 sport professionals, including thirty
outstanding athletes—nine master athletes and twenty-four
first level athletes. The representative teams of the
institute have consistently done well in university sports
meetings at both regional and national levels.
The institute attaches great importance to teaching reforms
and scientific research. In the past three years, the
institute has published sixty academic essays in national
journals, such as “Physical Education Science” and “China
Physical Education Technology”. Fifteen papers have been
presented at different national and international
conferences, including the National Physical Education
Scientific Conference and the World University Students
Sports Meeting Public Lecture Conference. The institute has
undertaken twenty-nine scientific research subjects at both
the national and provincial level, and has published over
three hundred academic papers, books and edited works.
The “Journal of the Physical Education Institute of Shanxi Normal University”, with its distinct local flavor, its
standard editing criteria and high academic level, has
gained circulation both nationally and abroad. It is one of
only a few such journals from teachers’ universities to
belong to the Federation of National Physical Education
Journals.
